Dictation creates text from words you are speaking now. File transcription turns an existing recording into text. A meeting recorder captures a conversation so there is a recording to work with in the first place.

These tasks can appear in the same product, but they are not interchangeable. Choosing around the job is more useful than choosing around the broad phrase speech-to-text.

When you want to write something

Choose a dictation workflow for an email, a project update, a note or an AI prompt that you are composing yourself. You are the speaker, and the goal is readable text in the place where you write.

The main checks are recognition, text insertion, cleanup and the amount of review the result needs. If local processing matters, verify both recognition and cleanup, not just whether the microphone can record while disconnected.

LoQuill's public product centers on this workflow on supported Apple Silicon Macs. Its recognition and writing cleanup run locally after the required setup.

When you already have a recording

Choose file transcription if you have a voice memo, recorded explanation or meeting recording and need a text version. You need to import a real audio file, process it and verify important details against the recording.

The important checks change: accepted formats, actual audio decoding, completion across the full duration and useful exports. A file extension alone does not establish that a recording can be decoded, and a good opening paragraph does not establish that the full file was processed.

LoQuill's Transcribe workflow handles existing files. It should be evaluated as a transcription workflow, separately from composing text with a hold-to-talk key.

When you need to capture a meeting

A meeting workflow starts earlier. The tool has to capture the sources you need during the conversation: perhaps a microphone, perhaps the audio from a call, or a recording created elsewhere.

If you need named speakers, timecodes, summaries or action items, add those to the checklist explicitly. The ability to turn an imported recording into paragraphs does not prove those capabilities exist.

Do not choose LoQuill solely on the assumption that local dictation means automatic live meeting capture. Check the exact released features and requirements for your situation. A transcript of an existing recording and a complete meeting assistant are different promises.

Three questions that clarify the choice

Am I composing new words, or converting words that were already spoken?

Do I already have a usable recording, or do I need the tool to create one?

Do I need plain reviewed text, a faithful transcript, timed captions, named speakers or a summary?

Write the answers down before comparing tools. If the required output is a timed subtitle file, a polished email workflow is not enough. If the required output is a short reply, a full meeting-recording service may solve more than you need.

Privacy follows the complete path

Ask how capture, recognition, cleanup, storage and export work. A local stage can be followed by a cloud destination. A cloud meeting service may have several separate storage and sharing controls. Read the documentation for the workflow you actually intend to use.

Only process recordings you are authorized to use and follow the applicable organizational policies. A product feature is not, by itself, permission to record or share someone else's conversation.

Use a realistic test

For dictation, compose a short message with a date and a correction. For file transcription, use a recording you can check at the beginning, middle and end. For a meeting recorder, verify that all intended audio sources are captured and that the output contains the capabilities you actually need.

Do not judge all three categories with the same demonstration. Each has a different failure point, and the test should reflect it.

Choose the smallest workflow that completes your task reliably. If you want to write by voice on a supported Mac, start with LoQuill's product information. If you need a particular meeting capability, ask about it explicitly before buying.
